A vibrant two-day event celebrating the artistry, heritage, and spirit of the Hmong people — inspiring future generations to carry these traditions forward.
Our Hmong dance competition is a vibrant, dynamic two-round event held over the course of two days — a staple of the Sacramento Hmong New Year.
It stands as a centerpiece of the festival, celebrating the artistry, heritage, and spirit of the Hmong people while inspiring future generations to carry forward these traditions. Choreography blends classical Hmong movement with contemporary expression, and each performance honors both ancestral form and modern voice.
Dance teams travel from across California — and increasingly from across the country — to compete on the SHNY main stage. The competition is judged by a panel of cultural practitioners, professional choreographers, and community elders.
Classical Hmong dance using traditional choreography, music, and attire — judged on cultural authenticity and technical execution.
Modern choreography that blends Hmong cultural elements with contemporary, hip-hop, or world dance styles.
Dancers ages 12 and under. A celebration of the next generation carrying our cultural traditions forward.
Performers ages 13–17. Bridging youth innovation with maturing technical skill and stage presence.
Every registered team performs their first piece. Judges score points to teams in each division to advance to Sunday's championship.
Finalists return to the main stage for their championship piece. The highest-scoring teams from each division are crowned division champions.
Champions are honored with trophies, cash prizes, and the distinction of representing the Sacramento Hmong New Year community.
